| Children and
teenagers may need to receive counseling for a variety of reasons. Sometimes
children are having difficulty learning in school and begin to develop low
self-esteem because they feel they don't fit in with their peers. Other
children may be upset about family problems or may have difficulty dealing
with their family's divorce. Teenagers are trying to develop a sense
of who they are and often feel torn between wanting to remain a child in
the safety of their family's love and wanting to break away from the family
nest and be an adult. This search for identity makes teens particularly
sensitive to peer pressure and may result in your teen becoming involved
with relationships with peers or adults that are not in their best interests.
Sometimes children feel uncomfortable talking to their parents about their problems because they are afraid of worrying or hurting their parents. You have not failed as a parent if your child needs counseling. The shame is not in needing counseling, but in not taking advantage of all the benefits that counseling offers. Counseling helps your child learn to solve his or her problems in a more healthy, productive manner. Counseling is not a crutch but a tool to help your child to develop to his or her fullest potential. |
